Injury derails Greenwood graduate’s stellar senior year as Bull Dogs pitcher

A dominating senior season in the pitching circle has come to a premature end for Brittany Gray.

The Greenwood Community High School graduate, who was enjoying an All-America caliber year at the University of Georgia, sustained a season-ending injury to her right biceps. She is expected to make a full recovery after surgery, but her collegiate pitching career is over.

Gray was 16-1 this spring for the fifth-ranked Bulldogs, and her earned-run average of 0.48 led the Southeastern Conference and ranked second in the nation.

“We’ve been so fortunate to have Brittany wear the Georgia red and black for almost four years,” Georgia head coach Lu Harris-Champer said in a statement. “She has had a tremendous career in the circle, capped by a phenomenal senior year.”

For her career, Gray is fifth in Bulldogs history with 60 wins and 126 appearances and eighth with 39 complete games. She is only the sixth pitcher in Georgia history to pitch 500 innings.

She struck out 134 batters in 2018 and wound up just five shy of 500 for her career, finishing sixth on the school’s all-time list with 495.

Gray still hopes to play professionally after graduating in December.
