American Red Cross asking for blood donations ahead of 4th of July

The American Red Cross is urging Hoosiers to donate blood as the Fourth of July holiday approaches.

Red Cross officials say the organization usually sees a large decline — around 21% — in donations during holiday weeks. When blood donations drop, so does the blood supply, which makes it extremely challenging to ensure blood is available when hospitals need it, according to an American Red Cross news release.

By scheduling and keeping appointments in July, donors can help provide for those in immediate need of lifesaving care. As thank-you to those who donate, all who come to give blood from June 30 to July 10 will receive an exclusive Red Cross recycled cotton tote bag, while supplies last, the news release says.

To schedule an appointment to donate, you can download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
