Fire at Polo Run damages eight units, injures one in Greenwood

A fire causing one injury and damaging eight units broke out at Polo Run Apartments in Greenwood early Saturday morning.

The Greenwood Fire Department was dispatched at 1:54 a.m. to the 1000 block of Westminster Row within Polo Run. A call from the alarm company and a call from a resident advising the fire alarms were going off and that there was smoking coming out of the roof, both alerted firefighters, according to a news release from Greenwood Fire.

GFD’s Engine 92 arrived on the scene about five minutes later to find a three-story apartment structure with smoke billowing from the roof-line. Fire crews from Greenwood and surrounding areas quickly began pumping water to the fire as they arrived. Additional firefighters worked to make sure the adjacent apartments were clear, fire officials say.

At least eight apartments were damaged by the fire or by water damage following the fire, according to Greenwood Fire.

One person, who is believed to be a maintenance worker for the complex, was transported to an area hospital. He was treated and released for minor burns and smoke inhalation. It is unclear at this time how he sustained these injuries, fire officials say.

Greenwood Fire was assisted by Seals Ambulance, White River Township Fire Department and the Greenwood Police. The Red Cross and the Johnson County Fire Angels also responded to the scene to assist the residents who did not have alternative housing arrangements for the night.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, fire officials say.
