60-second safety: Collar your four-legged friends

This safety series is designed to help you prepare your family for life’s emergencies — big and small — and keep you as safe and healthy as possible when Mother Nature or life throws the unexpected your way. Take the next minute to help make yourself and your family safer.

To many of us, pets are like family. But during an emergency, it is easy for them to become scared and run away or hide.

To make sure your pet is found and returned quickly after a tornado, fire, traffic accident or other emergency; use a permanent ink marker to write your phone number directly on the collar. Tags can be lost or fall off, and it can be hard to read a tag if you can’t get near the animal, but writing your phone number in big print on their collar makes it easier for your number to be seen and called.

Even if your animal is microchipped, having your phone number on their collar can cut hours or days off their return time and your worrying.
