Scores of students across the county will take to the stage this spring in productions as varied as Dr. Seuss and William Shakespeare.

And while classic musicals such as “The Sound of Music” and “The Beauty and the Beast” are designed to attract and entertain audiences, their success is important to school music programs.

A big-name show can be key to filling the seats, directors said.

Most directors pick shows based on their appeal for all audiences but also to showcase students’ talents and to make the local high school musical a community event.
