A new store is opening in Franklin, marking the city’s first new major retailer in five years.

Big Lots plans to open a 30,883-square-foot store in the vacant portion of a building on U.S. 31. The discount retailer would locate in the south part of the Tractor Supply Co. building, which has been empty for more than a year.

The proposed store would improve the city’s appearance by filling a highly visible vacancy along U.S. 31, Franklin Mayor Joe McGuinness said. Big Lots also will add jobs and a shopping option that could help attract more out-of-towners and spare city residents a trip to Indianapolis to get what they want.

“It’s just nice to have a tenant for that building and to have new big-box retail, since it’s been many years,” he said.
