Local Catholics rejoiced at the selection of a new pope, whom one priest called the people’s pope.
Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was selected Wednesday as the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Catholics from Johnson County and the southside said they were impressed that the new pope took the name Francis and thought he would show humility. They said they were glad to have a pontiff from the Americas and praised the newly elected pope for asking the masses to pray for him before giving the traditional blessing.
