GREENSBURG
One week after winning sectional championships, the Center Grove’s boys and girls cross country teams have extended their postseasons to the semistate.
They did it by sweeping the boys and girls titles at Saturday’s Greensburg Regional.
Next up is the Carmel Semistate on Saturday at Northview Christian Life Church.
The Trojans will be joined by Franklin’s boys and girls teams, which placed third and fourth, respectively, at the regional.
The top-five teams and top-15 individuals from non-advancing teams qualify for the semistate.
In the girls race, No. 10 Center Grove competed without its top runner, senior Tori Schoettmer, but finished well ahead of the pack with a team score of 32. Perry Meridian was next with 80.
Schoettmer, a three-time state qualifier and defending sectional champion, sat out with a stress fracture in her right leg.
Center Grove senior Jordan Timmons, who missed the sectional because of a back injury, returned for the regional and got second place behind Oldenburg Academy’s Sarah Billingsley.
“I knew I had to go out with the leader and have the other girls follow,” Timmons said. “We just need to stay positive now about approaching the semistate.”
Even with the injury setbacks, the Trojans still had six runners in the top 12.
