If Andrew Smeathers is experiencing some sort of sophomore slump, it’s impossible to detect in his voice.

Smeathers, who through 29 games has not contributed as much statistically to the Butler University men’s basketball team as he did as a freshman, remains characteristically upbeat.

“I’ve had my ups and downs. As a competitor you want to be out there,” said Smeathers, the former Center Grove High School player and a member of the 2011 Indiana All-Stars team. “I try to focus on doing the little things in practice that are going to make the team better.”

If that means implementing his deceiving leaping ability and endless wingspan to defend a teammate of nearly any height or position in practice, the wiry 6-foot-6 forward will do that. If it means running his mouth on occasion in an effort to toughen the mindset of a fellow Bulldog for life on the road in the Atlantic 10 Conference, he’ll gladly oblige.
