Chase shuts down I-65 in Bartholomew County

A police chase involving a Franklin man shut down part of Interstate 65 in Bartholomew County midday Thursday.

Lorenzo Marcedo Mendez, 24, of 204 Washington St., Franklin, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license, false informing and possession of a false government identification, police said.

Tests showed Mendez had a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent, police said.

Police were called shortly after noon about a possible drunken driver in the area of U.S. 31 and Central Avenue, Columbus Police Department spokesman Lt. Matt Myers said.

The driver didn’t pull over when an officer tried to stop him and continued traveling at up to 70 mph despite driving on one tire rim, Myers said. The vehicle stopped about five miles north of the I-65 and U.S. 31 interchange.
