The Christmas season brings memories, contemplations and customs for everyone who celebrates it. The Daily Journal asked area residents to share their thoughts about the season. Though different experiences, all the responses were rooted in the core values of Christmas — charity, togetherness and spirituality.

“His family was very poor, even before the Great Depression, and his parents treated Christmas just like any other day.

“My father remembers getting a gift only once in his childhood, a suit from a neighborhood charity group.

“When he had his own family, he worked hard — also joyously — to ensure that his children had what he did not have. He and Santa Claus were best friends.”
