The vest worn by the man behind the desk includes heavy doses of Marty Johnson’s new favorite colors.

It’s all about navy and powder blue these days for Johnson, who continues to learn his way around Perry Meridian High School as its first-year athletic director.

Trading his practice whistle for folders filled with forms and other paperwork, Johnson, the boys basketball coach at Whiteland Community High School from 2006-09, is enjoying the transition from teacher/coach to administrator.

“I love it. I like going to the events and watching them play, and I have just great people around me,” said Johnson, who spent six years at Whiteland as a physical education teacher. “(Longtime assistant athletics director) Mike Armstrong   is a great resource to go to.”

Johnson wouldn’t have considered such a career move had his two children not been in their 20s. But with son Kyle, 24, and daughter Morgan, 20, a sophomore at the University of St. Louis, the timing seemed ideal.
