The tall, lean defendant walked up to the bench with a serious expression. He was charged with operating while intoxicated, more commonly known as drunken driving.

Accompanying the defendant was his lawyer and an interpreter. A Russian interpreter.

The lawyer told me his client was prepared to plead guilty. “Is that what you wish to do?” I asked the defendant. “Da,” he said — Russian for “yes.”

The man didn’t have a bad criminal history but he had a prior offense and he was going to jail. Nevertheless, he seemed relieved to be getting it all over with.
