Caffeine — a harmless or harmful buzz? Not a question coffee-drinking adults want to address but a concern for our youth.
Energy drinks, loaded with caffeine, are popular with teenagers and young adults, with names such as Amp, Monster, 5-Hour Energy, Red Bull. One-third of teenagers report using energy drinks on a regular basis.
Energy drinks may also contain guarana, taurine, gingko, vitamins, sugars and other natural ingredients and therefore classified as supplements, not drugs. Some are even marketed as dietary supplements, causing the user to feel as if the drink is really beneficial.
Some of these ingredients stimulate and enhance the effects of caffeine; others are present in adequate amounts in our diets.
