I am transcribing my father-in-law’s letters from World War II. He served on the battleship USS Iowa nearly from its christening through the end of the war.
When he was in training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in the Chicago area, it took just a day or two for his letters to make their way to Indianapolis. After the Iowa docked in Norfolk, Va., it took three to four days for his mail to reach home.
