Hundreds of Greenwood residents have asked the city to name the new pool or splash pad after the longtime manager of the old city pool and her husband.
The Greenwood City Council is considering whether to name either facility after Betty Dawson, who worked at the old Greenwood City Pool for more than four decades, and her husband Bill Dawson, a former Greenwood Citizen of the Year who led a local Boy Scout troop for more than 30 years. One option would be to change the name of Pool Park on Lincoln Street to Betty and Bill Dawson Park, which could commonly be known as Dawson Park, said Nate Robe, a former assistant scoutmaster who helped lead the campaign.
The five-acre park just west of Market Plaza no longer has a pool but will have a splash pad area where kids can play in streaming jets of water. Pool Park will need a new name since it no longer will be home to the city pool, which likely will be built at Freedom Park.
