The county has given initial approval to a proposal supporting the Second Amendment.

The proposal, which was drafted by Commissioner Brian Baird, states the county rejects any federal law past or present that infringes on the right to bear arms and also orders the county sheriff not to enforce those federal regulations inside the county.

County commissioners unanimously approved the proposal, which would need a second approval before it could go into effect.

Baird said he felt it was necessary for the county to show its support for the Second Amendment amid discussion by federal lawmakers about new gun control laws.
