County rethinking local fees: Tax shortfall has council hoping to keep towing, ticket money closer to home

Johnson County is looking at new ways to replace diminishing tax income, such as by fining businesses that have too many false alarms or charging a fee if a sheriff’s deputy unlocks your car.

The Johnson County Council asked county office managers to figure out how to bring in more revenue, after $2 million in spending was cut this year. They’ve been looking at adopting new fees or increasing existing ones, such as by charging higher fines to gas station owners who aren’t properly measuring the amount of gas they sell.
