You won’t be able to light up at any local bars under a new countywide smoking ban that’s up for final approval by commissioners at their Nov. 5 meeting.

The Johnson County Commissioners have preliminarily approved a countywide ban prohibiting smoking on all county-owned or leased properties and in all public places and workplaces, including bars, private clubs and hotels, according to the county auditor’s office.

The ban applies to both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the county, meaning residents in Greenwood, Franklin and other communities will have to follow the county’s ban in all cases where the county ban is more restrictive than what the cities have approved, county attorney Kathleen Hash said.

If given final approval, the county’s smoking ban would be stricter than state law, which took effect this summer and bans smoking in most public places or within eight feet of public entrances.
