The local unemployment rate ticked up for the start of the year.
In January, Johnson County's unemployment rate increased to 7.9 percent, up from 6.9 percent in December, according to a report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
Statewide, the rate also increased to 8.6 percent, up from 8.3 percent in December, the report said.
The new numbers showed that about 5,700 local workers were out of a job in January, compared to about 5,000 in December, the report showed.
The local unemployment rate was higher than the start of 2012, when the rate was 7.7 percent, the report said.
