A missed first-quarter scoring opportunity didn’t necessarily cost Franklin’s football team the game Friday, but it began an adverse domino effect for the host Grizzly Cubs against Mid-State Conference rival Decatur Central.

Franklin drove to the Hawks’ 8-yard line and chewed up more than nine minutes of clock on the game’s opening drive, but Decatur Central blocked a 25-yard field-goal attempt. The Hawks then went on to score on each of their next four possessions, building a 27-0 halftime lead and cruising to a 40-14 regular season-ending victory.

The Cubs concluded the regular season with a 3-6 record. They were 1-5 in league play. They’ll host Bloomington North in next Friday’s Class 5A first-round sectional game.

Decatur Central improved to 4-5 overall and ended league play at 4-2.
