The frantic pounding on her neighbors’ doors got closer and closer, and she knew she needed to open her door and see what was happening.

Lisa Webber almost never opens her door to strangers, and it’s common for her to ask people to identify themselves through a closed door before opening it. But Wednesday afternoon she opened her door to Michelle Sharrett, a woman who lived in an apartment across the parking lot. Sharrett’s estranged husband had just threatened to kill her and a friend.

Few of Michelle Sharrett’s neighbors at Devonshire Apartments heard what happened when Kevin Sharrett, Michelle’s estranged husband, came to her home Wednesday and an argument started.

Residents said their apartments are well-soundproofed. They didn’t hear the threats Michelle Sharrett said her estranged husband made to her and her friend, 47-year-old Steve Lively. And few reported hearing the sound of a gunshot that police said killed Lively moments later.
