Late last month, students at Center Grove High School packed sacks of food for youngsters at two elementary schools to take home with them for the weekend.
The purpose of the effort was to make sure that disadvantaged students have access to proper nutrition at home. While the students from North Grove and Pleasant Grove elementary schools who qualify for free and reduced-price lunches can enjoy healthy meals during the week, such is not always the case over the weekend. The extra food was designed to bridge that gap.
Sadly, that’s the situation across the state. Hoosier families continue to struggle financially as the state has seen large declines in income over the past dozen years, according to data released this fall by the U.S. Census Bureau.
