Nonprofit agencies traditionally see a burst of generosity around the holidays; but after the first of the year, when those holiday bills come due, donations tend to taper off or even plummet.

Local organizations that help the needy are seeing this trend and are being forced to stretch their limited donations as the number of families asking for help each month has stayed steady or even increased.

In recent weeks, the agencies have lowered the amount of money each family can receive and have sought out new sources of donations to make sure everyone is helped.
