A prominent Johnson County developer has purchased a former grocery store site that’s sat empty in Whiteland for a decade.

Allen Commercial Group put in the winning $675,000 bid for a property at a Whiteland Road and U.S. 31, where Mr. D’s and Safeway once operated groceries. Attorney Bob Wildman said Allen will demolish the building and hopes to redevelop it within a year.

The developer hopes to bring in some sort of commercial business, such as a store or a bank, Wildman said.

Allen has not yet been in talks with any prospective businesses, because it first wanted to see if it could successfully purchase the property, director of leasing John Cummingham said. The company bought the property in a court-ordered auction.
