A Franklin Community High School graduate watched firsthand as President Barack Obama accepted the renomination Thursday at the Democratic National Convention.

Kevin Perkins has spent the past nine years in Iowa supporting the president and met the Obamas during a campaign stop last month. Earlier this year, the Obama campaign asked Perkins if he would represent Iowa on the convention’s rules committee, marking his first trip to the convention.

He had always wanted to go to the convention, but because he used to coach football he never had the chance to make the trip.

As a member of the rules committee, Perkins was one of 186 people, representing all 50 states, who answered questions about and approved changes for convention rules. If the convention wanted to change any of its rules or procedures during the week, they had to be approved by the committee, he said.
