Greenwood resident Zach Cooper participated in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials and is a viable candidate for the 2016 Summer Olympics. File photos

A 14-year-old Greenwood boy is finding out that long flights, layovers and time changes all come with being one of the nation’s foremost young divers.

Coming off an outstanding summer in which he took part in the Olympic Trials and, most recently, placed second in the platform event at the USA Senior Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., Zach Cooper has resumed training in preparation for the Junior World Championships.

Here’s the kicker: They’re in Adelaide, Australia.

The flights alone might be enough to jumble the internal clocks of even the most-seasoned traveler, much less a home-schooled eighth-grader whose only previous out-of-country experience has been to Canada.

A member of Team USA, Cooper leaves Sept. 27, with competition Oct. 8-13 at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

Rest assured, he’ll be ready.
