Sattin Screiner is a junior at Whiteland Community High School.
She spent two weeks this summer studying at Indiana University’s Midsummer Theater Program and will portray Alice Sycamore in Whiteland’s production of “You Can’t Take it With You,” opening Oct. 5.
How do you relate to your character?
I can relate to my character because we both have quirky, eccentric family backgrounds. Similar to Alice, I find that I am different from my family in many ways, yet I still belong and love my family.
How did you get
involved in acting?
Back in the fifth grade, my intermediate school formed a drama club and was putting on “The Wizard of Oz.” I decided to try something new and go to auditions, just to see if it was something I enjoyed doing. I ended up playing Dorothy, and the experience made me fall in love with acting.
What is your favorite
part of acting?
Character work. You find out so much more about yourself through the process of trying to be someone else. It is a very eye-opening experience, and it’s always fun to be able to make up and invent your character’s background story.
Who would play
you in a movie?
I would want Zooey Deschanel to play me. Her personality reminds me a lot of myself. She has a very distinct sense of humor, and her slightly ditsy side is similar to myself.
What is your favorite play?
It’s hard to pick a favorite because there are so many good shows out there. Recently I have had an interest in “The Laramie Project.” I think it’s a truly inspiring story, and I tend to like more serious and dramatic shows with inspiring messages that get you thinking.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself in a city doing something theater-related. I’m not someone who plans out every last detail of my life. I’d rather just roll with the punches and go wherever life takes me. But I do know that I always want theater to be a part of my life, even if I’m not always acting.
What is the last movie you saw in the theater?
“The Hunger Games”
What is your most embarrassing moment?
Although I’m not very easily embarrassed, the most embarrassing thing would probably be the fact that I have broken my nose countless times because I have an ongoing war with sliding glass doors.
Describe your morning routine.
I wake up at around 5:30 every morning to take a shower. I have to try on at least six different outfits until I find something that suits my mood for the day, which usually takes me until 6:50, leaving me enough time to grab a Pop-Tart and go. I pick up my two friends, and we carpool to school. On lucky days when we’re all three on time, we have time to make our weekly Starbucks run. We get to school at about 7:20, and class starts at 7:40.
Do you have a secret talent?
I do have one thing that could be considered a secret talent. I can tie a cherry stem in a knot in my mouth, without using my hands.
What is your favorite website?
Either Wanelo or Twitter. Unfortunately, I’m addicted to both.
What fall activity are you most looking forward to?
I’m most looking forward to the fall play. It’s always a great way to start a new school year, and it’s always rewarding to see all of your hard work pay off.
