The federal government shutdown has stopped the Army National Guard from working on a project in Greenwood.
Furloughs for federal employees because of the congressional stalemate have forced military workers to stop dismantling a former concrete plant. The work had been ongoing since the summer.
The National Guard offered to pay for demolishing the former Prairie Materials concrete plant, which has sat unused for years on Worthsville Road east of U.S. 31. Greenwood plans to widen Worthsville Road in the area, and the old plant is in the way.
