A local food pantry has received a grant that will help cover rent and utility costs and allow more money to be spent on food for families.

The Interchurch Food Pantry was given a $2,500 grant by Duke Energy, which awards money to nonprofit organizations as a way to give back to the areas the company serves. The grant will cover nearly half of the pantry’s operating expenses for a month, co-pantry manager Carol Phipps said.

The agency has had an increase in the number of families needing help this year.
