Anyone who writes a bad check for a Greenwood utility bill will have to pay a $20 fine.

Greenwood plans to charge $20 for any checks that are returned for insufficient funds. Controller Adam Stone recommended the fee as a way to improve collections and cover costs.

Residents who fail to pay their sewer bills on time also would have to pay a fine of 10 percent of the outstanding balance. Any late payments made would be applied first to late fees then to past-due balances and finally to current balances.

The Greenwood City Council unanimously approved the fines earlier this week. They will apply to anyone who gets sewer or stormwater service from the city, including residents in northern White River Township.
