ANDERSON

The Grizzlies rallied to close within eight points with a little over a minute left, but eventually lost to host Anderson 79-65 in their men’s basketball matchup Saturday.

The Ravens improved to 9-7 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and 13-10 overall while Franklin College dropped to 7-9 in the league and 10-13 in all games.

After falling behind by 19 points in the second half, Franklin whittled the hosts’ advantage, moving to within nine points on a layup by center Zach Merschbrock with 1:42 to go.

Anderson answered with a layup and a dunk to go up by 13, but the Ravens’ Phil Hogan was whistled for a technical foul on the dunk with 1:05 remaining.

The Grizzlies got two free throws from junior forward Gunner Erwin and then, keeping the possession, got a 3-point basket by sophomore guard Bailey Howard to pull Franklin within eight points at 73-65. But the Ravens outscored the visitors 6-0 in the final minute to claim the 14-point win.

The Grizzlies were paced by Howard’s 12 points. Erwin and Merschbrock scored 11 each and freshman guard Patrick Ellis hit a trio of 3-pointers to chip in nine.

Franklin College will travel to the College of Mount St. Joseph for their next game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
