It’s way too early to call this a conference championship game.
But this Mid-State showdown between conference favorites Greenwood and Martinsville had all the makings of a fall classic.
The Woodmen, behind quarterback Ben Heller’s three touchdown runs and an upgraded passing game, outlasted the Artesians, 41-40, in the conference opener for both teams.
“It’s as big a dogfight as I’ve ever been in,” said Heller, who twice rallied the Woodmen to take a fourth-quarter lead. “I’m proud of our offense and defense. We had to come back and respond, and we did.”
