Time to come clean. The first time you heard the word “Gonzaga,” you probably figured it was either:
My first remembrance of the Spokane-based university came in 1984. U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball coach Bob Knight had voiced praise for the point guard out of Gonzaga during tryouts held at Indiana University.
John Stockton didn’t make Knight’s final roster, but for the first time maybe ever, the Gonzaga brand was out there. Stockton would go on to use his 19 NBA seasons, 10 All-Star Game appearances and guy-next-door wholesomeness to make us even more aware.
