Injured officer released from hospital

A Greenwood police officer was injured after he crashed his police car into a house during a pursuit that began in Center Grove early this morning.

Lt. Brian Blackwell drove over a patch of black ice, lost control and crashed his patrol car into the house, at 8540 Royal Meadow Court, Indianapolis.

Blackwell was taken to Franciscan St. Francis Health-Indianapolis where he was treated for injuries and released. Blackwell's vehicle hit the house and a tree, and the car sustained heavy damage.

"We all know that, in a high-speed pursuit, things change quickly. The road conditions can change unexpectedly. Those are just one of the risks that go with that kind of activity," Fillenwarth said.

Blackwell was one of several officers involved in a chase that started about 4:20 a.m. at Stones Crossing Road and State Road 135 when a caller reported a suspicious vehicle. Police said the suspects may have been involved in a business burglary and had stolen items in their vehicle, according to a news release from Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox.
