Inmate's death at jail under investigation




An inmate has died at the Johnson County jail.

Thomas A. Wyss, 59, Whiteland, was pronounced dead at the hospital on Sunday.

Wyss collapsed in his cell after 5:30 p.m. Another inmate hit the panic button in the cell, which summoned correctional officers, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency workers and firefighters came to the jail and tried to rescucitate Wyss and then took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the release said.

The Johnson County Coroner was contacted to help investigate the death. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death, the release said.
