One of the county’s largest fire departments is buying land for a new fire station, expecting to have to move its headquarters when Interstate 69 comes through the county.

The White River Township Fire Department plans to spend $195,000 to buy nearly three acres of land on Morgantown Road, north of Smith Valley Road.

The existing fire department headquarters, at 850 S. Mullinix Road, will be in the way if the state extends I-69 along State Road 37 as planned, so relocating will be necessary, Fire Chief Jeremy Pell said.
