To the editor:
My wife and I have a very simple solution that is working for many people. The freshman year in college is basically mandatory courses for almost all major areas of study that are available at almost any accredited college, anywhere.
The cost of room and board and/or out-of-state tuition is extremely high for the freshman college year, considering the alternative where they can get an education right where they live (with their parents) during the freshman year.
With few exceptions, there is little to gain by both the parents and the student in the freshman year by sending their inbound college freshman somewhere else to live when they can do that starting in the sophomore or junior year at a considerably lower expense.
