To the editor:

The article of Feb. 28, “Phone Company Offers Low Income Rates,” regarding the intent of Century Link (a.k.a. United Telephone) offering reduced rates for deserving people that cannot afford telephones. I think this is good of them. However, I cannot afford any more “good ol’ boy charity,” explanation below.

The legal contribution requested of Century Link to pay to the Universal Fund by way of Life Line is being passed on to Century Link subscribers by way of billing us. We are not responsible for their contribution, which is being used to pay for the Obama free phones. This new venture no doubt will bring more charges to my phone bill as well as yours.

Should you see these names and charge on your phone bill, you might want to call the FCC for explanation. It may be all phone companies are doing the same thing. You might want to check it out.

Phone number you might need: FCC 1-888-225-5322; Life Line 1-888-203-8100; Universal Fund 1-888-641-8722; Century Link Customer Service 1-800-366-8201.

Yes, I have submitted a file to the FCC to return from Century Link money gained by erroneous billing.
