To the editor:

Even if you always vote a straight Republican ticket, it is urgent this November that you cross over to vote for Democrat Glenda Ritz for state superintendent of public instruction. Her Republican opponent, Tony Bennett, has been a disaster. Among his achievements are:

  • Eliminating class size limits
  • Funneling state money from the public schools to religious and for-profit schools
  • Granting contracts to these “turnaround” schools which allow them to make unlimited profits from public funds
  • Cynically taking large campaign contributions from these for-profit schools

How is this in the best interest of our children? These are not Democratic values, and I know they cannot be for Republicans either.

Glenda Ritz is a two-time winner of the Teacher of the Year award at two different Indiana schools and is licensed in elementary, middle school, high school, special education and library science. She is a genuine educator, not a politician, and she will bring back local control to our public schools.
