To the editor:

In a response to Ron West wanting to up gas prices from 2 cents to 5 cents a gallon higher, is he nuts?

Obviously Ron West only drives around Johnson County and doesn’t have to depend on the cost of gasoline to go to work. The cost of gasoline is so terrible now that all the food and clothing and everything we buy has nearly doubled in the last four years because of gas prices.

Why does Ron West think $25 per year for a wheel tax is so awful? It is not only fair, but cheap compared to more tax on gasoline.

Actually I would rather pay $5 to $10 more on the wheel tax than have my gasoline go up even more. We are paying $25 per year now for the wheel tax. Guess what? People who smoke cigarettes are willing to pay $45 and $50 for a carton, and they do that every week.

I have never heard of a tax so cheap and very necessary, and actually, everyone pays the same for this tax. I think the motorcycles and trailers and such don’t have to pay the full $25, like cars, so Ron West, what is so unfair about it? If the tax is done your way, then everyone will go a few blocks away to buy their gas, where it is cheaper.

Then Johnson County would have less money coming in than it does now. I don’t believe we have to go to the legislature to solve this one quickly. The Johnson County Council could vote on it right now, or more likely, after you leave in January.
