To the editor:

In the Sept. 14 issue of the Daily Journal you printed a letter from Cassie Burnett supporting the formation of a town for the people in White River Township.

In this letter Ms. Burnett tries to give the impression that the county commissioners don’t have any real choice in this matter once a legal petition to form a town is properly submitted. To reach this conclusion, Ms. Burnett blithely assumes that it is so obvious that the “best interest of the territory involved” is to form a city that the commissioners have no choice but to vote for its formation.

I’m sure it will come as a shock to the commissioners that their own personal feelings about whether this is a good idea or not are of no importance, but my guess is that the county commissioners are made of sterner stuff.

Once Ms. Burnett has reached her conclusion, she then goes on to castigate the “no-towners” as “emotional” and engaged in a “sky is falling” mentality. These characterizations would be laughable if this wasn’t such a serious issue. However, it is a serious issue, and I believe that name calling and character assassination should have no part in the ultimate decision.
