Local cities and towns added thousands of residents in a little more than a year, with some outpacing the growth of other central Indiana communities.

Bargersville added 2,000 residents, largely due to annexations in recent years that increased the size of the town from 2 square miles to 18 square miles.

Greenwood added nearly 2,000 residents, a growth of nearly 4 percent. That rate of increase was more than other central Indiana communities such as Carmel and Fishers, according to numbers released last week by the U.S. Census Bureau. The numbers are estimates of population growth from when the U.S. Census was done in 2010 to July 1, 2011.

Other Johnson County communities grew by less than 2 percent, according to the estimates. Nearly 4,400 new residents were added in cities and towns across the county.
