There was a quarterback in Greenwood named Ben Heller the last time the Woodmen started a football season 3-0.
He was 9 years old and calling the shots for a youth league team called the Jets.
It was 2003, and Heller — a third-grader at Westwood Elementary School with visions of what might be once he hit his teenage years — found himself totally on board with everything one of the best football teams in school history was doing.
Whether the 2012 squad goes on to become mentioned in the same sentence as this, or any other sampling of past Woodmen glory, is a question to be answered in the coming weeks. But one thing is certain: Heller, the Greenwood Community High School football team’s 6-foot-1, 200-pound quarterback, will take on this, or any other challenge, pads-first.
