Police have arrested a Greenwood man they say led police on a high-speed chase and nearly hit an officer.

Barry Simpson, 50, was arrested on charges of criminal recklessness, resisting an officer, possession of marijuana and attempted murder. Police said Simpson swerved toward an officer, and the officer had to jump out of the way.

An employee at a store in Franklin called police around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday and said a man was giggling and told the employee he thought someone had given him drugs. An officer found the man in his car in the parking lot and asked him to get out of the car, But the man, later identified as Simpson, drove out of the parking lot, according to the police report.
