Man killed in police shooting identified

Officials have identified the man killed in a gunfight with sheriff's deputies on Wednesday.

Derek Hobson, age 25, of Greenwood, was killed, Johnson County Coroner Craig Lutz said.

The shootout with sheriff’s deputies happened Wednesday afternoon in a cemetery east of Franklin after the deputies said the man aimed a gun at them, Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said.

Hobson was warned to stop but pointed a gun at the deputies. It is unclear who fired first.

The Indiana State Police is investigating the shooting.

Sheriff's deputies went to the area on the report of a suspicious person. Hobson was resisting arrest after telling sheriff’s deputies that he was wanted on a warrant when the shooting started.
