For years, Greenwood has supported senior service agencies, bus routes and a community band that puts on summer concerts.
The Greenwood City Council gives about $90,000 a year to help pay the nonprofit or helping agencies. The council has given the money to the same agencies for years but now wants to see if any of it could be put to better use.
If the council decides to give tax dollars to other agencies instead, that shift could force agencies such as The Social of Greenwood and Johnson County Senior Services to seek new sources of money, such as from donations or grants, or to cut back services.
Supporters want to make sure that no funding is cut. More than two dozen people attended this week’s city council meeting to show support for The Social, and seven spoke on its behalf.
Each year, Greenwood helps support bus routes by giving IndyGo $45,480 and Access Johnson County $15,640. The city also gives $20,000 a year to The Social of Greenwood senior citizens center, $10,000 to Johnson County Senior Services and about $4,000 to the Greater Greenwood Community Band.
