Fewer Johnson County public high school seniors are graduating a semester early this school year, but more early graduates are earning diplomas that require more classes in math, science and social studies.

Right now, 88 students from area high schools plan to graduate at the end of the semester, which for most schools ends next week. That’s down from 110 students in 2012, according to numbers from area school districts.

But a larger portion of this year’s graduates earned academic or technical honors diplomas, or Core 40 diplomas, which are the types of diplomas school and college officials believe will better prepare students for college standards.
