The little American flag pushed Rajwinder Bains to memorize every name, fact and date she would need to become a citizen of her new country.
The flags are awarded to immigrants who become United States citizens, and she would get one only when she passed the citizenship test. When the mother of two got her flag this year, she put it next to the one that had pushed her to study — her husband’s. Now they are both U.S. citizens.
Bains, who is a dual-citizen in India and the U.S. — came to America three years ago with her oldest son, Navdeep Bains. When they arrived in America, neither spoke English.
