Last fall Jessica Bechman tried to get out of bed, only to find her legs had stopped working correctly.

Bechman had been used to dealing with health problems throughout most of high school, most of which left her with numb hands and feet or with unstable blood pressure. But she’d never lost the strength needed to move herself before.

“I was absolutely terrified,” she said.
